Our mission is to create equitable access to nature in all communities and inspire a diverse new generation of environmental leaders. To achieve this, we focus our efforts on three transformative initiatives, or “Big Ideas,” that amplify our impact and guide our strategic direction.
Our three “Big Ideas” address systemic inequities, empower marginalized communities and build sustainable solutions for environmental justice. Each initiative reflects our commitment to bold, impactful action that advances our mission and creates lasting change.
1.Diversifying the Next Generation of Environmental Leaders
- ➔ Big Idea: Empowering underrepresented individuals on the frontlines of climate adaptation to lead transformational change in conservation.
- ➔ Initiative(s): Through innovative programs like the Careers in Conservation and Urban Forestry Equity Fellowship, we will build a diverse, skilled workforce poised to reshape the future of environmental leadership.
2. Transforming our Communities through Conservation
- ➔ Big Idea: Empowering communities to create and sustain conservation spaces that address food security, environmental justice and economic resilience.
- ➔ Initiative(s): Through initiatives like City Roots, Capital City Farms and the West State Street Bridge Revitalization, we support residents in transforming urban landscapes into thriving hubs of natural health, connection and opportunity.
3. Driving Urban Forestry for Resilient Cities
- ➔ Big Idea: Expanding urban tree canopies to enhance resilience to extreme heat and rainfall, improve air quality, and promote biodiversity in underserved communities.
- ➔ Initiative(s): Programs like the Tree Ambassador Program and Capital Canopy Initiative train local residents in urban forestry care, fostering green jobs and community-led climate adaptation.
